Aug 22, 2013 · IMO machining 7/8" of material from two sides of a 2-1/2" square piece of aluminum using a fly cutter is a lot of machining. Depending on the rigidity of your milling machine I would say a .050" depth of cut by 2-1/2" wide is a lot to ask of a fly cutter.
A Fly Cutter is any single point cutter that is used on a mill. The most common fly cutters are used as surfacing tools. But, you also see single point form tools referred to as fly cutters on mills, for example a form tool being used to create an involute on a gear tooth. I get asked about Fly Cutters a
Also known as fly cutters, these clamp onto tool blanks (sold separately) to machine flat surfaces. As the cutter rotates, the tool blank creates a wide, shallow cut on the face of the workpiece. An alternative to face milling cutters for intermittent and light duty use, these cutters allow you to remove and hand-sharpen the tool blank when it becomes worn.

A fly cutter provides a single cutting surface, which isn’t as fast but is much more uniform and develops into a smoother surface. Cost can also be a factor. We’ve seen Tormach customers use large face mills on their machines, but those tools are expensive – and so are the inserts at $10-$20 each.
Fly cutting, which is also called single point milling, is one of the most versatile milling operations. It is done with a single-point cutting tool shaped like a lathe tool bit. It is held and rotated by a fly cutter arbor. You can grind this cutter to almost any form that you need, as shown in Figure 8-34. Formed cutters are expensive.
Since the original incentive for the invention of the milling machine was to cut the flutes in twist drills there is a whole range of cutters shaped to cut such flutes. In the same way as a fly cutter can be used in a vertical mode it is also possible to have a fly cutter in the horizontal mode.
A fly cutter is a single point tool, usually used for machining plane surfaces. It is an inherently accurate tool when used in this way, and if the toolbit is a good one, rigidly held, it will produce smooth, flat surfaces with the most basic of set ups - as long as the mill is correctly trammed (i.e. the column is at right angles to the table).
Also known as fly cutters, these end mills clamp onto tool blanks to machine flat surfaces. As the cutter rotates, the tool blank creates a wide, shallow cut on the face of the workpiece. Arbor-Mount Milling Cutters
The ram-type milling machine is characterized by a spindle mounted to a movable housing on the column to permit positioning the milling cutter forward or rearward in a horizontal plane. Two popular ram-type milling machines are the universal milling machine and the swivel cutter head ram-type milling machine.
Aug 13, 2008 · In a given machine, this is often the reason to go to a fly cutter; for rigidity and flywheel effect you can rig up effectively a faceplate (with a boss bolted to it holding the tool) Such an approach can push it out to maybe 16" diameter on a turret mill which would struggle to run a 5" facemill

Aug 09, 2006 · My question is really about the time and the impact on my circa 1950 machines. When I use a mill end I can take about 3 thousands in a pass, and with a 1/2" mill end it takes three passes.
